Who PCGS are
The Professional Coin Grading Service is the other of the two services whose opinion is accepted everywhere. Like NGC, they authenticate the coin, grade it and seal it in a holder carrying the grade and a unique certification number.
The two use the same seventy point scale, so a PF70 means the same thing in either holder. Where they differ is in vocabulary: what NGC calls Ultra Cameo, PCGS calls Deep Cameo.
Choosing between the two
Neither service is the right answer. Both are independent, both are recognised by dealers and auction houses, and a coin graded by one is not harder to sell than the same coin graded by the other.
Collectors often prefer one holder for reasons of consistency, because a run of coins in matching holders looks like a set. If you are building one, tell us which you are collecting and we will look for coins in that holder.
Checking a coin before you buy it
Every graded coin listed here shows its certification number. Type that number into the grading service's own verification page and you will see the same coin, the same grade and the same holder, described by somebody with no stake in the sale. We would rather you checked.
Coins are sent sealed in the holder they were graded in. Breaking the holder ends the grade, so we never open one, and neither should you if the grade is part of why you bought it.
