Our record
Proof sovereigns we handle
Coins of this kind that have passed through the shop, each one of one, photographed in the holder it sold in. If one of them is the coin you are after, tell us and we will look for another.

What makes a sovereign a proof
A proof is not a grade or a condition. It is a way of striking a coin: polished dies, specially prepared blanks and more than one strike per coin, which brings up detail a single blow would leave soft and gives the flat parts of the coin a mirror finish.
The Royal Mint issues proof sovereigns as collector pieces in limited numbers, separately from the bullion sovereigns struck in quantity. A proof leaves the Mint in a presentation case, and the ones that matter later are those whose surfaces were never touched.
Why proof sovereigns are usually graded
The whole value of a proof is in its surfaces, and surfaces are exactly what handling ruins. A fingerprint or a hairline that would not matter on a circulated sovereign is the difference between one grade and the next here.
That is why proofs are the coins most often sent for grading. A sealed holder settles what condition the coin is actually in, states it in a way every dealer and auction house reads the same way, and protects it from the handling that would change the answer.
Checking a coin before you buy it
Every graded coin listed here shows its certification number. Type that number into the grading service's own verification page and you will see the same coin, the same grade and the same holder, described by somebody with no stake in the sale. We would rather you checked.
Coins are sent sealed in the holder they were graded in. Breaking the holder ends the grade, so we never open one, and neither should you if the grade is part of why you bought it.
