1891 Melbourne Mint Gold Full Sovereign Victoria Jubilee Head MS62
NGC MS62
An 1891 full sovereign from the Melbourne branch mint, graded MS62 by NGC, with the M mint mark below Pistrucci's St George and the Dragon. Melbourne was given over to sovereign production from 1872 until 1916, striking under the Royal Mint's authority, and this one is the “long tail” variety.
About this coin
The obverse portrait was introduced in 1887 for Queen Victoria's golden jubilee and is credited on this listing to Joseph Edgar Boehm.
This is the “long tail” variety, identified by a single spur of hair in the left indent of the horse's tail — the detail collectors of the series look for.
The Melbourne Mint was established in 1872 and given over to sovereign production until 1916. This one was struck there, in Australia, under the Royal Mint's authority.
